Will CBD Show Up On A Drug Test?

The short answer is: No, CBD will not show up on a drug test. BUT that may not be enough to make sure you’re 100% in the clear. Trouble is, some CBD products contain trace amounts of THC, and that’s what you need to worry about.

What are drug tests looking for?

Most tests are looking for THC when screening for cannabis use, as it is the principal psychoactive metabolite found in cannabis plants. They do not look for CBD.

CBD is another medicinal metabolite found in hemp. It has its own properties and a unique chemical structure. It has been known to help with pain, inflammation, anxiety, seizures, arthritis, PTSD, epilepsy, nausea and vomiting. It will not get you high.

CDB oil is usually made from hemp that contains low concentrations of THC. You can buy products that are 100% THC free. Do your research before buying anything. Make sure you are getting a high quality product that is completely THC free.

Some products may still have THC in them because of what’s called the ‘entourage effect.’ The theory is that the compounds work more effectively in tandem. But the more THC in the mixture, the more likely you are to fail a drug test. Keep an eye out for these and avoid them if you have a drug test coming up.

What will cause you to fail a drug test?

Most tests follow the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s guideline of a 50ng/mL cutoff for THC. Anything above that concentration in your urine will cause you to fail.

The legal federal limit for THC content in a CBD product is 0.3%. The good news is, at this level, you would have to consume over 1000mg of CBD products in one day to fail a drug test. That’s like eating 10 packages of CBD gummies!

Also, some extra caution should be taken if you are currently detoxing from THC use. When used in tandem with THC, CBD has been shown to contribute, in some cases, to higher THC levels for longer periods of time. So if you’re detoxing from THC and are consuming CBD, the detox may take longer than normal.

What’s the best plan of action?

Be smart, be cautions. You can agree, failing a drug test would be a HUGE problem. It’s always best to err on the side of caution.

Generally, CBD products are safe, but only when they are high quality and 100% THC free.

Our personal recommendation is to find a quality broad-spectrum CBD product. Broad-spectrum does not contain any detectable amounts of THC while still retaining a natural cannabinoid, terpene, and flavonoid profile.

We support Elan CBD as the premium choice for broad-spectrum CBD products. Their products are from 100% American grown hemp plants while remaining open and transparent with what’s inside their product through verified third party lab results.

It’s definitely best to put some effort into getting a high quality product than failing a drug test and facing the consequences.
