Mexico was once seen as the biggest black markets in marijuana, but the government’s next step could change everything about cannabis culture.
The bill to legalize medical marijuana was just sent to the government pending legalization. Given the current president’s support for marijuana, it seems like everything will move forward.
According to the bill, THC will be legally regarded as something that can offer benefit to the medical and scientific community. The doors will be opened for the cultivation of medical marijuana for the purposes of sale and scientific research. The point is to take away prohibition and decriminalize the use of marijuana in Mexico.
President Nieto, Mexico’s current leader, completely supports the legalization of cannabis. According to him, Mexico is ready for a change on the cannabis frontier. He states:
“We, Mexicans, know all too well the range and the defects of prohibitionist and punitive policies, and of the so-called war on drugs that has prevailed for 40 years,”
Things look extremely promising for the future in Mexico with regards to cannabis. They have always been one of the biggest producers of cannabis in the world. Dramatic social and economic effects are expected if Mexico jumps into the legal market.
Mexico’s movement away from drug trafficking cartels isn’t just going to effect Mexico, either. It is something that is likely to affect the whole world in a positive way. At the moment, the model being proposed by the Mexican government is being praised by marijuana activists around the world.
For all those thinking that Mexico is the next place on their list for marijuana tourism, don’t be too much in a hurry. It will be a long time before smoking publicly is legal. It is going to be offered to the medical community first, but this is progress!
