Understanding Why Weed Gives You Red Eyes

What actually makes your eyes turn red after smoking weed? Actually, if your eyes are turning red it means that your weed is doing exactly what it should.

Every marijuana enthusiast is familiar with the red eyes phenomenon. It comes to strike whenever it pleases, and for a lot of us it is the cause of a lot of social discomfort.

Red eyes is a sign that your marijuana is successfully treating your glaucoma (if you have it). One of the effects of smoking weed is that it decreases blood pressure. This causes the blood vessels in your eyes to dilate. For those people with glaucoma, this dilation encourages blood flow through the eyes.  Red eyes is actually the very reason that glaucoma patients swear by cannabis.

There are some people out there who believe that red eyes is caused by an allergy to cannabis, but that wouldn’t explain why people who smoke cigarettes don’t get red eyes. Getting smoke in your eyes is a sure way to give yourself red, watery eyes. But that definitely isn’t the reason for the red eye effect.

In any case, if you’re a marijuana user you should always carry around a solution to red eyes. Eye drops that clear up the eyes (and take away the red eye phenomenon) are an essential to every stoner’s survival kit, and it goes a long way when you’re freaking out that everybody knows your high.

The good news is that red eyes lasts at most a couple of hours, and usually subsides after the initial high. So in the worst case scenario, call in late to your appointments and wait for your eyes to go back to normal!
